What Does Camels and Baboons Have to do With Alzheimer's Disease?

I have got some very interesting stuff to write about which I cannot wait to share with you. Living in the land of the sun, surf and sand, I have a special affinity to camels. My heart skipped a beat when I read that camel could help fight Alzheimer’s disease.

Alzheimer’s disease is the loss of brain function that gradually gets worse over time; it affects memory, thinking and behavior. Now you might wonder what the camels have to do with this. See here is the link scientists have found an entirely new class of antibodies discovered from camelids which include the camels, dromedaries, llamas and alpacas.

These antibodies are able to cross the blood- brain barrier, diffuse into the brain tissue and reach the desired target. The specialty is that it does not need any kind of carrier to carry it. These natural antibodies may be a ray of hope for those affected with brain diseases that are poorly diagnosed and healed.

In a study which was unique of its kind examined the relations between social network and Alzheimer’s disease. The study found that having close friends and staying in contact with family members offer a protective effect against the damaging effects of Alzheimer’s disease.

Let us move on from camels to baboons. Be it a human or a baboon it pays to have friends.  By having a lively social network, you have better health and longer life. In the baboon study scientists grouped three forms of baboons, nice females, aloof females and loner females. Of the three groups the loners were the ones who suffered higher stress levels.

The nice and aloof baboons had better reproductive health and strong social bonds. The researchers end the article by saying that being nice and friendly you can increase your social circle which translates to long healthy life and you stand a better chance of passing your genes. Above all you can save yourself from the much feared Alzheimer’s disease.

Take care,
